By Tousif Khan - Wed Jan 11, 4:50 pm

SYQuraishiNEW DELHI: The Election Commission has asked the Centre to put on hold sub-quota for Muslims till the elecions are over in the five states, according to Times Now.

The BJP had petitioned the EC after Congress leader and Union minister Salman Khurshid promised nine per cent sub-quota for backward Muslims while campaigning for his wife in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh.

The party urged Chief Election Commissioner SY Quraishi to take action against Khurshid for violating the model code of conduct by announcing a quota for Muslims if the Congress was voted to power in Uttar Pradesh.

Khurshid, however, defended his remarks.

Defending Khurshid’s announcement, Congress had said that in its manifesto for the 2009 Lok Sabha elections it had promised to give reservation to backward Muslims and implement the Sachar Committee report and the Rangnath Mishra Committee report on minorities.
