Umpire kills Bangladesh cricket fan with bat

A cricket umpire killed a teenage spectator in Bangladesh by hitting him on the head with a bat in a dispute over a contested decision, police said Sunday.

Police in northern Bangladesh are searching for the umpire of a cricket match after the irate fan he struck on the head died in hospital.

During the game, 15-year-old Nazrul Islam left the stands, ran onto the pitch, and began arguing with the umpire about a previous call. The incensed umpire then took a bat from one of the players and struck the teenager over the head with it.

After the attack, the 15-year-old appeared to be fine. But he had suffered an internal cerebral hemorrhage and was later taken to a hospital where he died the next day.

According to police, the umpire has gone into hiding.
